In the 1870's Alexander Graham Bell and Elisha Grey both invented machines that could transmit speech. Johann Philipp Reis (a German scientist) was actually the first one to actually come up with the idea of the telephone. Antonio Meucci (an Italian scientist), made an early version of the telephone, but he didn't get to commercialize, and he lacked work. Also, in 1865, Dr. Manion Loomis transmitted telegraphic messages. When Alexander invented the telephone, he was only 22 years old. He actually barely knew about electricity, but he was an expert on sound and speech. When Alexander spoke into the first phone he said "Mr. Watson come here, I want to see you". Phones grew bigger and bigger across the world. It took 37 years to finally make a cell phone, or a portable phone. Also in 1979, public phones were up for testing .
